Michael Waugh Added to the Saint John Sea Dogs

Michael Waugh will be graduating
from Blackville School this June

The Saint John Sea Dogs has added defenceman Michael Waugh to their team's 55-player protected list. Waugh is a senior at Blackville School.

Waugh is the captain of the Miramichi Rivermen, which is part of the NB/PEI Major Midget League, and he will stay with the Rivermen for the rest of this season.

Waugh recently answered some questions for The Blackville Talon about the news:

How did you find out the news?
I was at a Timberwolves practice when I got a phone call. I didn't believe it was the General Manager of the Sea Dogs, but thought it was one of my friends (playing a prank).

How did you feel? What were you thinking?
I was really excited. I didn't think a QMJHL team would be calling me.

What does this offer mean to you as a person and as a hockey player? Why is it important to you?
This offer opens a lot of doors to keep playing a higher level of hockey and maybe even help with my education later on.

When do you start? 
The training camp is in August.

Do you have anything you need to do in preparation?
Mainly gain weight and get stronger.

What will be your plans after you graduate, given you will be playing for the Sea Dogs?
After I graduate I will continue to play hockey whether it will be in the Q or Junior A.

Staff Appreciation Week

This week Blackville School celebrated Staff Appreciation Week.

The Blackville Home and School Association expressed their appreciation with snacks for the staff during the week along with a potluck lunch on Thursday.

Theatre Troupe Performs at Blackville School

Members of The Calithumpians

The Calithumpians, a theatre troupe based out of Fredericton, were at Blackville School to perform for grades 6 - 10 on Wednesday, February 10.

The theatre troupe performed a production called "Careers Here NB: Becoming all you can be ... in NB."

The Calithumpians, in partnership with New Brunswick's Departments of Post Secondary Education Training and Labour and Education and Early Childhood Development, are visiting middle and high schools free of charge.

Through the production, The Calithumpians are informing young audiences about New Brunswick's labour market and career futures in a more engaging way that encourages students to reflect on their career paths.

5th Annual Eagle Vs Cobra Basketball Challenge

The NSER Cobras will be coming to Blackville School on Monday, February 15 to face off against the BHS Eagles for the 5th Annual Eagle vs Cobra Basketball Challenge.

The Senior Girls game begins at 6:00 pm and the Senior Boys will follow at 8:00 pm. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for students. Come out to the school to support our Eagles.

Elementary Students Celebrate Literacy Day with Timberwolves

Three hockey players from the Miramichi Timberwolves were at Blackville School during Family Literacy Day on Wednesday, January 27.

The Timberwolves went to every elementary classroom, where they read, signed autographs and answered questions. At lunch, the Timberwolves joined the students in the cafeteria and afterwards they went outside with the students
to play ball hockey.

The elementary students wore hockey jerseys to school to celebrate the event. The visiting hockey players were Riley Scott (24), Tucker White (5) and Bobby Dugan III (1).

Local Author Visits School

Local author Valerie Sherrard reads to
 elementary students at Blackville School 

Local author Valerie Sherrard visited Blackville School on Thursday, January 28.

Elementary students met in the library where she read a few of her books and answered some interesting questions from the students. The students were very excited about her visit.

Prior to her visit, the students had the opportunity to read some of her books that are in the school library and they were able to order some of her books in advance.
