Grade 5 Students and Guests Enjoy Banquet on June 14

The grade 5 students and their guests took advantage
of the photo booth where they could "ham it up" with
different props.

The grade 5 banquet was held at Blackville School on the evening of June 14.

Each grade 5 student could invite two guests, along with the elementary staff. 

Guests were treated to pizza, garlic fingers and a sundae buffet. 

There was also a photo booth with different props where students could pose for pictures with family members.

Awards were given in all academic areas. The Ron Pauley Memorial trophy was awarded to Tessa Munn. This award recognizes leadership in athletics.

Drinking and Driving Awareness Video Awarded $1300

A video submitted in April by Blackville School grade 12 students for this year's Safe Grad Initiative students was recently awarded just over $1300.00.

The Safe Grad Initiative is sponsored by Alcool NB Liquor (ANBL) in cooperative with the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

A total of $20, 000 is offered to winning submissions to help fund safe grad activities. The value of the awards are dependent upon the quality of the submissions.

The objective of the Safe Grad Initiative is to promote responsible choices among teenagers when celebrating high school graduations.

The video created by the four students at Blackville School provides some statistical information as it recounts a tragedy that occurred due to drinking and driving.

The students who produced the video are Calvin Furlong, Bailey Coughlan, Michael Waugh and Brooke Underhill. It also features a Blackville School teacher, Mr. Aaron Johnston.

Middle and High School Recognition Awards 2016

 the Most Outstanding Academic and Extra-curricular Awards.

Blackville School held their Recognition Awards Ceremony on Monday, June 6. 

Grade 12 student Ashlyn Moody and grade 10 student Daniel Richard received the Most Outstanding Academic and Extra-curricular Awards.

Grade 12 student Brook Underhill received the Fenton Sturgeon Memorial Award which is awarded to a grade 12 student who has been involved in sports for all four years of high school. Special consideration can also be given to students who have volunteered their time coaching younger athletes outside school hours.

High School Male Athlete of the Year went to Grade 12 student Dylan Storey and High School Female Athlete of the Year went to grade 12 student Ashlyn Moody. 

The Kathy McCormack Award, recognizing athletes who are great school ambassadors, went to grade 12 student Josh Underhill.

Middle School Male Athlete of the Year went to grade 8 student Drake Donovan and Middle School Female Athlete of the Year went to grade 8 student Hayley Underhill.

Blackville School hosted this year’s Championship ASD-N Elementary Spelling Bee on Thursday, May 26.

A student from each grade level came to Blackville from all over the District to compete in the Spelling Bee against their peers. 

The students had already won competitions held in their own schools, and were now competing to see who would be the ‘Grand Champion’ of their grade level.

With hard words like “cleanliness,” “contagious” and “receive,” all of the K-5 students provided an impressive display of

Middle and High School Plays Recognized at Provincial Drama Festival

Blackville School plays from both the middle and high school levels were recognized at this year's New Brunswick Provincial Drama Festival held from May 11-18 in Fredericton.

The Middle School Drama Club's play Drama Geeks Vs. Zombie Cheerleaders received six awards and recognitions. Middle School students Reese Urquhart, Anna Sturgeon, Abby Keenan and Patrick Donovan all received Outstanding Actor Awards.

The play also received an Outstanding Use of Choreography Award and a Special Adjudicator’s Mention for Innovative Lighting.

The High School Drama Club's play Game of Tiaras also received six awards and recognition. Laura Jardine and Jasmine Jardine received awards for Outstanding Student Directors. Robyn Stewart received and Outstanding Actor Award and Gina Keenan received an Outstanding Supporting Actor Award.

The play also received an Outstanding Use of Costume Award and a Special Adjudicator's Mention for Ensemble Work and Comedic Achievement.

The Theatre Arts 120's play The Nine Worst Breakups of All Time received four awards and recognitions. Calvin Furlong received a Special Adjudicator's Mention for Playing the Villain.

The play received Special Adjudicator's Mention for Ensemble and Special Adjudicator's Mention for Taking Risks. The play also received an Outstanding Use of Choreography Award.

School Choirs Achieve Gold Standard at Music Festival

The Blackville School Girls Choir performing

The Blackville School Elementary Choir and the Blackville School Girls’ Choir achieved a Gold Standard at last week’s Miramichi Regional Music Festival 2016.

The Elementary Choir sang, “If You Sing An Allelu” and “En Roulant Ma Boule,” and the Blackville School Girls’ Choir sang, “Laudate Dominum” and “The Swallow."

Awards will be given out at the final concert on Thursday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Carrefour Beausoleil School Auditorium.

Ms. Frenette and all of the choir students would like to thank the piano accompanist, Mrs. Margaret Craig for "doing such a fabulous job as our accompanist at the festival."

They also send thanks to the parent volunteers: Tracey Hallihan, Sarah Mullin, Cindy Hallihan, and Elana Hallihan. "They traveled on the bus with us for assistance; it was greatly appreciated," said Ms. Frenette.

Obstacle Course Champions

Recently at BHS the middle school (grades 6-8) participated in an elite obstacle course made by Mr. Paul McKinnon. All runners did an excellent job completing the course.

According to MacKinnon, a teacher at Blackville School, the first attempt was "a rough going over" due to weather conditions at lunch time. But later, during a second attempt, it went much smoother.

MacKinnon believed the first try was not as successful because of the lack of help and the fact the equipment was occupied by students who were not competing. The poor weather conditions played a major factor.

With the help of the outdoor pursuits class and suitable weather, the top 6 boys and girls from each class got a second chance to run the course. Each of the winners above received $10 Subway peelers.

The high school outdoor pursuits class even got the chance to run the course (grades 11 and 12) and their times were beaten by the middle school students. This led MacKinnon to state that the high school students may possibly need a fitness plan in the near future.

Overall the activity was a huge success with the middle school students. Everyone participated and had a great time leaving the students wanting to have another obstacle course in the near future.

Ryan Moody was the Grade 6 boys Champ with an impressive time of 1:17.

Helena Arbeau finished first for the Grade 6 girls category in 1:20 seconds.

Finishing first for the Grade 8 girls was Hayley Underhill with a smashing time of 1:24.

Reese Urquhart ran an impressive 1:27 to capture first for the grade 7 girls. 

Drake Donovan sprinted his way to an incredible time of 1:19 in the Grade 8 boys category.

People's Picks (Oct 12-16)

Student off the week is Amber Walls. Amber is a hard working student who tries her best in class. She is also respectful to teachers and fellow students.

 Teacher of the week is Ms. Duffy.  She works great with all of her students and is a respected teacher. She would like to thank all of her friends, family and students for being selected as teacher of the week. 

Staff member of the week is Ms. Breau. She is a great guidance counsellor and helps all students to the best of her ability. She is well liked by the students here at Blackville School.

Grade 6 and 7 Awards and Students of the Month for June

Grade six students who received Honours in Social Studies

Grade 6 and 7 students at Blackville School were acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to their studies on Monday morning, June 15.

The Masters of Ceremonies were Chloe Curtis and Hannah Jardine. They announced the awards for Honours in each subject, both Good and Perfect Attendance, along with the Outstanding Scholar Awards. 

The Students of the Month for June were also announced: William Schofield 6D, Zac Carrier-Taylor 7M, Robyn Stewart 7W, Julie Jardine 8M and Amber Furlong 8O.

Grade 5 and 8 Students Celebrate at Banquets

Both grade 5 and 8 students at Blackville School attended separate banquets on June 9 and 11 respectively.

The grade 5 students were celebrating their completion of upper elementary, while the grade 8 students were recognized for their completion of middle school.

At both events, students received awards and recognition and enjoyed a meal with their families.

The grade 5 students viewed slide shows of the students through their earlier school years and a slide show of all the fun activities they took part in this year.

The students performed a dance to the song "Uptown Funk". Awards were given for top students in academic subjects, as well as Peer Helpers, Bucket Fillers and other areas of strength.

The grade 8 students celebrated their middle school years and academic achievements. The students also received peer awards that were
voted on by the grade 8 students themselves.

The elementary and middle school staff thanked everyone for coming and also thanked high school students from next year's graduation class who served the meal.

Special thanks also went to Andrea Donahue for decorating the cafeteria for the event and the elaborate balloon decorations were made by Annie Simoneau, mother of Grade 5 student Kendra Simoneau.

Blackville Student Recognized for Outstanding Sportsmanship

Larissa Bryenton

Grade 12 Blackville School student Larissa Bryenton is one of six student athletes to be selected to receive the NBIAA Raymond Légère Sportsmanship Award (Northern Conference).

The award recognizes student athletes who display outstanding sportsmanship towards team-mates, coaches, opponents and game officials. It is presented to student athletes by the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Larissa will be honoured for her accomplishment at the 10th Annual NBIAA Sportsmanship Awards Banquet scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 in Fredericton at St. Thomas University.

Larissa graduates from Blackville School in June. She is enrolled in the Veterinarian Technician program at Oulton College in Moncton. Her parents are Stephen and Joni Bryenton of Doyle's Brook near Chelmsford.

Elementary Students Receive Year End Awards

Elementary students at Blackville School received their year-end awards on Tuesday, June 17.

Students were recognized in several areas, including music, sports, and academic.

Grade Five Graduation Banquet

On Tuesday, June 10, Blackville Elementary held its first grade five Graduation Banquet.

All twenty six graduates with their guests attended the evening. M.C.'s of the evening were Keaton Walls and Reese Urquhart.

Students and guests were served a turkey supper by next year's graduating class. There were slideshows of the students growing up over the years, and a final slideshow of our year together.

 For entertainment, the boys sang "The Good Ole' Hockey Game. The girls performed the song "Cups'. Awards were presented that night by Principal Rodney Buggie and Vice-Principal Pam Underhill.

The Ron Pauley Memorial Award went to Reese Urquhart. The Bronze "B" Awards went to Andrea Lynch, Reese Urquhart and Anna Sturgeon.

High School Vocalist of the Year is Ashlyn Moody and Cassandra Waugh. High School Instrumentalist of the Year is Cameron Hambrook. The High School Music Student of the Year Award was shared between Josie Furlong and Cassandra Waugh.

Middle School Male Athlete of the Year is Daniel Richard and Middle School Female Athlete of the Year is Olivia Buggie.

Highest standing for both Middle School Language Arts and Math went to Sarah Manderville. Sarah Jardine won the Ron Pauly Memorial Award which recognizes a student who displays a positive attitude and a hard work ethic. Middle School Student of the Year went to Jensen Urquhart. The Most Improved Middle School Student Award went to Nicole Nash.

Middle School Male Athlete of the Year is Tyler Gorbett and Middle School Female Athlete of the Year is Sarah Manderville.

Theatre Arts 120 Performance Received Recognitions at Drama Festival

The Theatre Arts 120 Class received ten recognitions at the annual High School Drama Festival. The cast of fifteen travelled to Fredericton last Thursday and Friday to perform.

The play Check Please 2/3 by Jonathan Rand received two Special Adjudicator's mentions for "Outstanding Ensemble Environment" and Outstanding Attention to Detail." There was also a recognition for "Outstanding Production."

Seven recognitions for "Outstanding Supporting Actor" went to Shawn Hallihan, Nicole Sullivan, Nolan Donovan, Valeja Birnbach, Marissa Donohue, Josie Coulter, and Jackson Hallihan.

Four students from Blackville School were recognized in their respective grade levels at the French Oratory Contest in Bathurst on April 17.
Stephanie Hayne placed third in Grade 7 Post-Intensive French. Cameron Hambrook placed first in Grade 8 Post-Intensive French. Ashlyn Moody placed first in Grade 9 Post-Intensive French and Cassandra Waugh placed first in Grades 11 and 12 Core French.
