A Busy Festive Season at Blackville School

Choir and Band Christmas Concert

As Christmas day approaches the Blackville School community held many different holiday events. One of the earliest events was the Choir and Band Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 8 in the school cafeteria. Click here for photos from the concert.

Students from K-5 held the "The Good Ole Country Christmas Special"  in the cafeteria on Wednesday December 16 and Thursday December 17.  The program featured Red Green, the Elementary Drama Club and the K-5 Christmas Singers. To see photos from this event, click here.

The Good Ole Country Christmas Special: Gift Wrap 101 

The High School Drama club held their play Santa-Napped on Thursday evening December 17.

The High School Student Council organized the Christmas Chaos Week (December 14-18). Throughout the week there were many activities played at lunch and each day was a different dress up day.

Monday was Red and Green, Tuesday was snow day, Wednesday was Ugly Christmas sweater day, Thursday was Santa's workshop day and Friday was PJ day.

Also on Friday the Student Council hosted a pancake breakfast for High School students and had karaoke for anyone who wanted to participate. Many of the students and teachers had a great time singing and dancing up on stage in the cafeteria. To see photos from the Christmas Chaos Week activities, click here.

Christmas Sock Hop

Elementary students from K-2 held a Christmas Sock Hop Friday afternoon, December 18. This was followed by a Christmas Sock Hop for Grade 3-5 students. For photos from the sock hops, click here.

The Middle School Formal was on Thursday December 10. To see photos from this event, click here.  The middle school students also had a pancake breakfast that week.

The Teddy Bear Project

Blackville School kindergarten students

Blackville school is partnered up with Instituto Tecnológico Avanzado en Educación del Sureste in Mexico for the Teddy Bear Project. This project, organized through the iEarn Collaboration Centre, involves Mrs. Norton and Mrs. Hallihan's Kindergarten classes as well as a class from Mexico.

The purpose of the Teddy Bear Project is to have students foster understanding and knowledge about other countries and cultures.

Mrs. Norton said the Blackville School got involved because it is something different to do and it is something for the kids to be excited about as they learn about a different culture.

"We will be taking the bear on trips to learn about cultural things that we do here that they may not do there. For example, one of the students will be able to take the teddy bear to a hockey game which they would not experience in Mexico," explained Mrs. Norton.

In the near future, there is a possibility that the classes may get a chance to communication online through video chat. The teacher from Mexico sends an e-mail to Mrs. Norton weekly to let her know how the teddy bear is doing.

They received Mexico's teddy bear on Friday October 24. They emailed Mexico to let them know it has arrived and also how it was doing.

Mrs. Norton's and Mrs. Hallihan's students expressed excitement and enjoyment over having the teddy bear at the school, as well as learning about Mexico and Mexican culture.

Helicopter lands at Blackville School

Kindergarten to grade five students at Blackville School were visited by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Tuesday, May 13.

The students watched the landing of a police helicopter, and they got to meet a trained police dog.

Colouring Contest Winners (November)

Literacy Week

As part of Literacy Week, kindergarten to grade five students at Blackville School attended a Literacy Evening on Wednesday, January 23.

Students were invited to wear their pyjamas and bring along their favourite teddy bear. Special guests read to the students and treats were provided by the Blackville Home and School Committee.

Bucket Filler of the Week (Oct. 15-19): Miranda Norton

The Bucket Filler of the Week is Miranda Norton from Mrs. Wall's kindergarten class. Miranda is always willing to lend a hand, and she has a wonderful smile which fills everyone's bucket!

Congratulations goes out to Miranda this week.

A student from kindergarten to grade three is recognized as the Bucket Filler of the Week on a bi-weekly basis.

Bucket Filler Award to Travis Manderville (Oct. 1-5)

Kindergarten student Travis Manderville was selected as Bucket Filler of the Week (October 1-5) for telling fellow student Bruce not to worry about anything at school, and that he would take care of him and show him what to do.

Congratulations goes out to Travis for not only filling his own bucket but someone else's too.

Students from kindergarten to grade three can be awarded the Bucket Filler of the Week Award.

Be One of a Kind!

Last Week (April 12 - April 16) Blackville School held their first annual "Be One of A Kind!" Week. The purpose of the week was to encourage students to make a difference and to develop empathy for others.

Classes in Kindergarten through Grade 12 participated in a number of events throughout the week. Some of the events included a food drive for the Miramichi Food Bank, Caught You Caring Campaign (where students who were randomly caught doing good deeds received a ballot that was entered for a draw for a movie pass), a positive message t-shirt design contest, and classroom lessons on kindness and making a difference.

The finale of the week was Pink Shirt Day in which students wore pink t-shirts to show that they agreed to take a stand against bullying. Many classes had 100% participation rates proving that Blackville School students can and do make a difference.
